Calling all budding photographers!

We’re launching a photography initiative, Photographer in Residence, and inviting carers to take part in this exciting project. You will be able to explore your caring role and share your experiences of caring through a camera lens. Photography is a powerful and creative medium that can convey caring experiences and the day-to-day life of caring for someone.

We are working with arts, education and events organisation, 18 hours, to run the workshops, who have a strong understanding of caring.

The workshops are free to carers and offer the opportunity to learn about photography and build photography skills, working with inspirational local photographer, John Cole.

Ideally you will have a camera that you can bring with you to the session, or alternatively bring your mobile phone to use. Photographs taken by carers will be featured in an exhibition of carers’ work in the East Sussex area with the aim to strengthen the voice and awareness of local carers with the wider public.

John Cole says, “For over thirty years I have worked all over the world as a professional photographer shooting assignments for major news corporations including The Sunday Times, The Observer, Newsweek and Paris Match. I have photographed celebrities, sporting stars and politicians, such as Mohammed Ali, Nelson Mandela, Princess Diana, Elton John, Ian McKellen and Alan Rickman. Which is fun, but what I really love doing is documenting ordinary people doing extraordinary things, giving voice to those who may not have a voice of their own.” You can find out more about John Cole and his photography here.

This project is a development of our successful ‘Artist in Residence’ programme, using photography and building on our ‘Writer in Residence’ project that involved creative writing workshops for carers across East Sussex to share their experiences of caring.

Our ‘Artist in Residence’ project resulted in the production of several short films, a poetry booklet, and a creative writing workbook which is free to access and available across all East Sussex libraries. The project was called ‘extremely impressive’ by the Alan Ball History awards, for its contribution towards recording oral history.
