Information for Families and Professionals

Who we support

The Young Carers Services supports young people who provide substantial physical or emotional care for a family member. Often the role the young person is providing within the home is one that would normally be more appropriate for an adult.

The family member may be affected by one or more of the following:

  • Physical disability
  • Long-term illness
  • Sensory impairment
  • Mental health problem
  • Drugs and/or alcohol misuse

The support is free of charge and open to all young people who meet the criteria of providing substantial care. The young person must also live in East Sussex.

The Service provides

  • Regular young carers clubs
  • Activities, trips and short breaks
  • Advocacy support
  • Regular newsletters
  • School based support

The Young Carers Service runs Clubs across East Sussex. The clubs provide young people with the opportunities to have fun, and make new friends in a safe and supportive environment.
The Service offers trips, activities and residential short breaks, where funding allows. Past events have included bowling, swimming, picnics, and the Young Carers Festival in Southampton.

Working closely with schools to ensure that young carers educational needs are understood. We are able top provide a DVD and schools pack containing information and strategies for identifying and supporting young carers within school.
