What is the Carers Card?

Care for the Carers is delighted to offer the Carers Card. Funded by East Sussex County Council and the NHS, this new multi-use card builds on existing services: the Carers Emergency Alert Card, CRESS and the Carers Discount Card. If you already have any of these cards – don’t worry, you can continue to use your existing card

  • Carry the card in your wallet to notify emergency services that you are a carer.
  • Notify the emergency services that you have a backup care plan through the Carers Respite Emergency Support Scheme (CRESS)
  • Get savings, discounts and special offers at retail and leisure venues across East Sussex – Find directory below.

All three services have now come together to form the Carers Card, so that you no longer have to carry more than one card. You can access the card and set up a CRESS backup plan through Care for the Carers.

You can find a directory of the businesses taking part in this scheme here: Carers Card Directory June Participating businesses may display a Carers Card sticker in their window.

This directory will be updated as new businesses join the scheme. Updates will also be posted on Care for the Carers Facebook and Twitter accounts as well as in our quarterly magazine, Careline.

If you are an unpaid carer, live within East Sussex, and would like to receive your Carers Card or you would like to make a suggestion of businesses that you feel would be beneficial on the directory, please call 01323 738390

What is CRESS?

Many carers worry about what would happen to them if, for example, they became ill or were involved in an accident. By registering for a CRESS card, you can get peace of mind by ensuring that alternative short-term care can be provided.

As part of your Carers Assessment, you can record a contingency plan. Ideally you will identify three people and/or care providers who will be able to step into your caring role in an emergency, who will be contacted to confirm they are happy to be nominated.

If there are no emergency contacts, or your contacts are unable to respond, Adult Social Care will arrange alternative care.

To read more about CRESS, please download our CRESS Information Sheet or visit the East Sussex County Council website.
