Care for the Carers celebrated its Silver Jubilee on 29th October with a party and awards ceremony at The View Hotel in Eastbourne. The local charity is the Carers Centre for East Sussex, and supports unpaid carers who look after relatives or friends who couldn’t manage without their help.
Level 3 Patisserie students from Sussex Downs College created some beautiful cakes which were displayed as centre pieces during the awards ceremony and enjoyed by the carers along with a cream tea. A string trio, also comprised of students, provided a gentle musical accompaniment at the entrance of the event, and the RX Shanty Singers entertained attendees during the cream tea.
The event also featured a “fun room” in which young carers and adult carers alike were able to participate in a range of games, have a go on a smoothie bike, enjoy a fun photo booth, enjoy a free massage or reflexology, and have their caricature drawn by one of two artists. A magician also roamed the crowds, impressing many of the guests with his close-up magic. A number of local businesses donated their services and/or raffle prizes in order to help make the event such a roaring success, and none of it would have been possible without a generous grant from The Big Lottery Fund, and both the Eastbourne Lions and Giraffe Press sponsoring the carers and volunteers’ awards.
CEO Jennifer Twist said “Care for the Carers has a dedicated and passionate team of volunteers, staff, and members. We are privileged to work with carers who do an amazing job and inspire us every day. It is humbling to have so much support – thank you to all our carers, volunteers, supporters and staff without whom our work would not be possible.”
