Safeguarding: What does it mean to Carers?
Safeguarding is about protecting the most vulnerable in our society. This would include those who have care and support needs and unpaid carers, as well as varying other adults in vulnerable positions. After consulting with carer representatives locally, it was agreed that Safeguarding should therefore be the focus of the Autumn Carers Forums in October.
There will be information on new local authority duties and how they affect carers, what to do if you are concerned about somebody and an opportunity to influence future services that affect carers. Not forgetting time to get to know other carers from your area and discuss the issues that matter to you.
The forums will provide the opportunity to listen to speakers, take part in discussions and visit a selection of information stands with representatives from the Safeguarding Adults Board, Adult Social Care, Association of Carers, Age UK, Headway and many more.
The Care Act 2014 sets out a clear legal framework for how local authorities should protect adults at risk of abuse or neglect. As a result, local authorities must fulfil a series of new safeguarding legal obligations.
Abuse and neglect could be prevented if concerns are identified and raised as early as possible. It is therefore important that everyone knows what to look for and who they can go to for advice and support. The Sussex Safeguarding Adults Boards aim to prevent and protect people who may be at risk of, or who are experiencing, abuse or neglect
- Abuse can happen anywhere and can be caused by anyone, including a partner, carer, relative, neighbour, friend, a health or social care worker.
- Abuse can be deliberate or unintentional. Sometimes it happens if a carer is having difficulty coping or just doesn’t have the capacity to provide the right level of care needed.
